Health Effects

ACUTE:
Swallowed:
May cause irritation to the mouth, oesophagus and stomach. Symptoms can include nausea, vomiting and severe abdominal pain.

Eye: May cause moderate irritation in contact with the eyes, which can result in redness, stinging and lachrymation.

Skin: Will cause irritation in contact with the skin, which can result in itching, redness and possible contact dermatitis.

Inhaled: Inhalation of vapours or mists may cause irritation to the mucous membrane and upper airways. Symptoms may include headaches, dizziness, coughing, central nervous system effects and breathing difficulties.

CHRONIC: Repeated or prolonged exposure to this material will result in skin irritation and aggravate existing respiratory disorders.

First Aid

Swallowed DO NOT induce vomiting. Immediately wash out mouth with water, and then give plenty of water to drink. Seek medical attention.

Eye If contact with the eye(s) occur, wash with copies amounts of water for approximately 15 minutes holding eyelids open. Take care not to rinse contaminated water into the non-effected eye. If irritation develops, seek medical attention.

Skin Removal all contaminated clothing. Wash gently and thoroughly with water and non-abrasive soap. Ensure contaminated clothing is washed before re-use or discard. If irritation persists, seek medical attention.

Inhaled Remove the source of contamination or move the victim to fresh air. Ensure airways are clear andhave a qualified person give oxygen through a face mask if breathing is difficult. If irritation develops, seek medical attention.

First Aid Facilities Eye wash and normal washroom facilities.

Advice to Doctor Treat symptomatically.

PRECAUTIONS FOR USE

Exposure Limits No exposure standards have been established for this material by the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission (NOHSC).

Engineering Controls Natural ventilation should be sufficient under normal conditions of use, however, where vapours or mists are generated the use of a grounded local exhaust ventilation system (drawing vapours/mists away from workers breathing zone) is recommended.

Personal Protection

Respirator Type (AS1716) Where ventilation is inadequate and vapours or mists are generated the use of an Air Purifying Respirator with an Organic Vapour filter complying with AS/NZS 1715 and AS/NZS 1716 is recommended.

Eye Protection Where splashing is likely the use of chemical goggles or safety glasses with side shield protection complying with AS/NZS 1337 is recommended.

Glove Type The use of PVA gloves complying with AS 2161 is recommended.

Flammability

Fire Hazards FLAMMABLE LIQUID: Remove all sources of ignition and intense heat.

Storage and Transport

Storage Precautions Store in a cool, dry well-ventilated area, out of direct sunlight. Avoid sparks, flames, and other ignition soucres. Store away from incompatible materials such as materials that support combustion (oxidising materials). Store in suitable, labeled containers.

Transport This material is a Class 3 - Flammable Liquid according to The Australian Code for the Transport of Dangerous Goods by Road and Rail. Class 3 - Flammable Liquids are incompatible in a placard load with any of the following:

  • Class 1 – Explosives
  • Class 2.1 – Flammable Gases, if both the Class 3 and Class 2.1 dangerous goods are in bulk
  • Class 2.3 – Toxic Gases
  • Class 4.2 – Spontaneously Combustible Substances
  • Class 5.1 – Oxidising Agents and Class 5.2 – Organic Peroxides
  • Class 6 – Toxic Substances (where the flammable liquid is nitromethane)
  • Class 7 – Radioactive Substances.

Handling Ensure a high level of personal hygiene is maintained when using this product. That is, always wash hands before eating, drinking, smoking or using the toilet

Spills and Disposal

Spills and Leaks Remove all sources of ignition. Increase ventilation. Wear sufficient respiratory protection and full protective clothing to minimise skin and eye exposure. If possible contain the spill. Place inert absorbent such as vermiculite, sand or dirt onto material. Use clean non-sparking tools to collect the material and place into a suitable labelled container. Do not dilute material but contain. Mop up the remaining material and place into the same container. If large quantities of this material enter the waterways contact the Environmental Protection Authority, or your local Waste Management Authority.

Disposal Dispose Disposal of this material should be undertaken by a registered chemical disposal company.

Fire/Explos. Hazards DO NOT USE WATER in a fire situation, as fire may spread.
