HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Health Effects

Acute – Eye The liquid and vapour are highly irritating to the eye and are capable of causing lachrymation and a burning sensation.

Acute – Skin The liquid is irritating to the skin and can cause dermatitis through defatting the skin.

Acute – Inhaled The vapour is irritating to the upper respiratory tract and inhalation may cause loss of consciousness. The material presents a hazard from a single acute exposure and from repeated exposure over a long term.

First Aid

Swallowed If conscious, give water or milk to drink. Induce vomiting. Seek immediate medical attention.

Eye Flush thoroughly with clean water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention.

Skin Wash thoroughly with plenty of water. Remove contaminated clothing. If irritation occurs, seek medical advice.

Inhaled Remove victim from source of exposure, lay patient down. Keep warm and rested. If available administer medical oxygen by trained personnel. If breathing is swallow or has stopped, clear airway and apply CPR. Seek medical attention without delay.

Advice to Doctor Treat symptomatically. Do not administer adrenaline.

Storage and Transport

Storage Precautions Check that containers are clearly labelled. Steel drum recommended. Store in a cool, well ventilated area, away from sunlight. Store away from incompatible materials and foods stuff. Do not use aluminium or galvanised containers. Check regularly for spills or leaks.

Transport class 6 – Poisonous (toxic) Substance shall not be loaded into vehicle or packed in the same freight container with:

  • Class 1 - Explosives
  • Class 3 - Flammable liquids where the flammable liquid is nitromethane.
  • Class 5.1 - Oxidising agents where the poisonous substances are capable of ignition and burning
  • Class 5.2 - Organic peroxides where the poisonous substances are capable of igniting and burning.
  • Foodstuffs and empty foodstuffs containers.

Handling Use good occupational work practice. Avoid breathing vapours and contact with skin and eyes. Avoid contact with incompatible materials. Avoid prolonged or repeated contact with skin. Avoid smoking, naked lights and ignition sources. Wear protective clothing. When handling, do not drink, eat or smoke. Use in a well-ventilated area. Keep containers securely closed when not in use. Prevent concentration in sumps or hollows. Do not enter confined spaces until atmosphere has been checked. Wash hands after use. Launder contaminated clothing.

Spills and Disposal

Spills & Disposal Clear area of personnel and move upwind. Wear breathing apparatus and protective clothing. Prevent from entering drains or water courses. Increase ventilation. No smoking or naked lights. Stop leak if safe to do so. Contain and absorb spill with earth, sand, inert material or vermiculite. Collect and store in labelled drums for disposal. If contamination of drains or water courses occurs, notify emergency services.

Disposal Recycle wherever possible. Consult manufacturer for recycling options. Consult State Land Waste Management Authority for disposal. If contamination of drains or water courses occurs, notify emergency services.

Fire / Explosion Hazard

Fire/Explos. Hazard Non-combustible liquid. Will not burn but heat produces highly toxic fumes/vapours. Heating may cause expansion or decomposition, leading to violent rupture of containers. Decomposes on heating and produces toxic fumes of carbon monoxide, path of fire.

Fire Fighting Procedures Alert Fire Brigade and tell them location and nature of hazard. Wear breathing apparatus and protective clothing. Prevent, by any means available spillage from entering drains or water courses. Use fire fighting procedures suitable for surrounding conditions. Do not approach containers suspected to be hot. Cool fire exposed containers with water spray from a protected location. If safe remove containers from path of fire.
